Does anyone know why we get ridges?

I have a few nails that have ridges from my cuticles all the way to the edges of my nail. I do buff them smooth every few weeks but its always something I wondered about.

Any ideas??

I've been told it has to do with vitamin deficiency . Sometimes damages to the nail bed it self.

I don't know what it is, but I hate water too.  I drink my water in the form of Iced T or something flavored. Especially in the summer Heat here, I can drink a whole 2 quart pitcher of something in a day if I'm outside!!

Water and general diet decisions cause ridges. Also, smokers (like myself) tend to have ridgy nails. Shame on we smokers.

That seems to be the general consensus.  Guess there is nothing we can really do about them but deal with them and file them. :)
